Shagbark was an exercise in honoring a historic property. Though few of the original shagbark hickories remain, the ambling drive up to the house is a celebration of mature shade trees with moonlights casting a filtered glow to guide visitors up the ambling drive.

This backyard oasis, located in Libertyville, provides family and friends a getaway from the day’s burdens. Mature, towering canopy trees are meticulously washed with subtle light to provide a sense of closure and security.

Strip lighting under the bridge gives the illusion that the structure is hovering just above the water, as if held aloft by light alone.
Modern Marvel
1. Warm-toned, well-spaced path lighting keeps grade changes visible and illuminates the natural stone paths, while neutral-toned accent lights anchor the key plant life from the front. Cool-toned moon lighting from the canopies above, casting a shadowed glow on the parking pad and walkways.
A Sunset Serenity
Views from inside the house looking outward were of prime consideration as that is the most prevalent perspective. The lighting we installed enhances a sense of depth in the composition and eliminates the “black mirror” effect when looking out of the windows at night.

The year-round, functional train system is a major focal point of this project. From the bistro lit deck, the entire family can observe them chugging around for hours on end. Also notice the canopies lit up behind the home, giving the space a sense of openness and context.

The symmetry of the home’s front facade required careful positioning of the fixtures in order to achieve uniform lighting from side to side. The decorative pendant and wall-mount fixtures were dimmed to balance their brightness with the landscape lighting.
